See Emily Play

I needed some quick pics of “Ball Gowns” to send to a client, and Emily took a break from revising to gallavant around Bedford Place in the cold for half an hour to help me out. Thanks Em! I put these together in a collage and you can see the complete – very hasty! – shoot on Flickr.

Thinking about body shapes in a new way

Design Process

  • Cocoon Alien Body (standard mannequin distorted with padding) withpaper
  • Draw seam lines onto paper
  • Cut paper along seam lines to create a two dimensional pattern, unrecognisable as a human contoured form
  • Manufacture an Alien shell in specifically chosen fabric for its interesting properties
  • Evaluate Alien shell on a conventional size 12 female mannequin to explore the voids created by the removal of the Alien Body
  • Develop the principles established to achieve an original outcome

It will be interesting to see the garments that come out this project at the ever interesting Sheffield Art School. The exhibition starts next week and I’ll post the images that (I hope) they will reveal then.

Solent Uni Style Challenge

I was invited to appear as “Fashion Expert” in a 3rd year Film & TV student programme shot today at Solent Uni, and what a lovely afternoon I had.

I took the panorama shots using an app on my iphone called Pano. They’re cool.

I was given a bottle of rose wine as a thank you which  I clumsily broke on the floor of the loo! How very embarrassing. In my defence – the lights had gone out and it was pitch black.

Fantastic time. Fantastic and talented people.

Hep Web changes

ALL DAY fiddling about with our website to try and make it ready for online selling. Hope I haven’t caused any hoo ha but please leave me a note in the comments if you spot anything weird.

Heppy Birthday to Us

Thanks to all our lovely friends who came a raised a glass to celebrate our first year at Hep Towers in Bedford Place. Our divine birthday cake commissioned from local cake wizard Hannah Banana made a wonderful centre piece as well as being extremely delicious.

And – as promised – Man at Hepwright’s made his first appearance. It felt odd but very welcome to have gents coming out of the dressing room for a change. I am also going to have quickly get better at talking man clothing language; a gent asked me the size of a shirt and all I could come up with was “about a 14″. Must do better.

We welcomed hatter Rachel Drewer to the party and showed the beautiful set of pictures to which we contributed recently. I started the evening wearing Rachel’s delicious onion hat. However, as you know our ceiling is rather low and I had to duck under every beam! I swapped for a feathery headband which co ordinated well with the chocolate brown silk Vintage Vogue frock I wore which I commissioned originally for my sister’s wedding last year.

I am so lucky. I love my shop. I love my customers. I have wonderful support and friendship from Sophie Stylist who brings a huge strength to the business with her energy and fashion eye. I have great neighbours, some of whom have become good mates in the short time we have known each other. I have a seamstress over the road, an excellent dry cleaner a few shops away, good food/wine on the doorstep, the best  photographic shop in the country on hand, hair and beauty experts to partner with…..I could not be luckier.

Thanks all. Here’s to the next year. x

Hardly seems possible….

Proper Halloween Costumes

Halloween seems to have become the dominion of sexy devils/black cats/pumpkin costumes, mainly sourced from Tescos.  We lovers of a flamboyant garment like dressing up which takes a bit of thought, planning and panache. And we like Halloween costumes whiuch have an air of mystery, threat and – well -gloom.

So we – well, Sophie mainly – spent today putting together these looks and a major new window display for your spooky pleasure.

Remember you can hire as well as buy outfits from Hepwright’s, so there is no reason you can’t go all out to make a chilling statement this Day of the Dead/All Hallows Eve. If you’re stuck for ideas, just ask and we’ll help.

We LOVE putting together a Halloween costume.
